Learning to Fly

The peaks and perils of learning to paraglide

Giving Something Back

Saturday morning didn’t turn out as smoothly as I had hoped and by the time I got up the hill with Jussara it was after 4pm. Luckily for me though it hadn’t been a good afternoon and I hadn’t missed anything. Everyone was just doing direct flights down to the northwestern landing spot.

I wasn’t going to screw around, and after the long week I’d had I thought even a short flight like that would be enough. Some of the new learners though weren’t keen to fly as Max and Simone were still up in the North of Brazil, and there weren’t any other instructors around as Xuxa apparently had a huge hangover from the night before.

Ismael wasn’t going to fly as he had never landed in the northwestern landing spot before and didn’t want to learn today. I remembered all the times I had been up the ramp and spent the afternoon waiting to fly and how bad I felt when I had went home without, and told him that I’d fly with him to Max and Simone’s bach. It was an extremely short flight there without a single curve, but I got there with enough height to do a quick pendulum into the landing spot between the 2 trees.

The ground was a bit wet and I was a bit surprised when I touched down and my feet skidded out from under me. I guess I was a little too complacent about doing such a simple flight. Ismael followed closely and landed just beside me. He was so happy about flying and I felt good for being able to help his confidence.

Total flight time: 4mins
